Walla Walla Wander

“So, where’s your first stop?” was invariably the first question we were asked when someone learned of the Machen a Mano adventure. Not many expected Walla Walla to be the answer. And, neither did we! Originally we planned to head south from Seattle, and work around the country counter clockwise. Allowing for Rene to properly recover from surgery, and then packing taking longer than anticipated (it always does), had us depart Seattle on the 15th of June.

In Walla Walla we were welcomed by our friends Brooke and Kalani who moved east of the mountains from Seattle almost a year ago. Brooke is enrolled in the enology program at Walla Walla Community College, and the gracious amount of wine that was shared showcased the amazing palate she has. (I forgot to take photos of the wine labels, whoops!). All of us live by food, so most of our time there was spent cooking and eating, and eating and cooking and sipping wine.

Time was also spent reorganizing, another round of downsizing and lounging by a river. We did venture out for a meal at AK’s Mercado, where Kalani is working, and were able to meet up with Robin Levanthal. The brisket tacos and beverages did not disappoint and service was spot on as well. (again, forgot to take photos. We were too busy enjoying everything.)

We are so grateful to Brooke and Kalani, for opening their home, letting us stay longer than we originally anticipated and sharing their wine, time and energy. For both of us, this was our first time visiting Walla Walla, and we are sure to be back.
